J.R. Simplot Ex-Situ Anaerobic Bioremediation Technology: TNT

چکیده
Abstract The J.R. Simplot Ex-Situ Bioremediation Technology, also known as the J.R. Simplot Anaerobic Bioremediation (SABRETM) process, is designed to anaerobically degrade nitroaromatic and energetic compounds with total destruction of toxic intermediate compounds at the completion of treatment. An evaluation of this technology was conducted under the SITE Program on soils contaminated with 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) at the Weldon Spring Ordnance Works (WSOW) site. This SITE Demonstration utilized 23 m (30 yd3) of TNTcontaminated soil mixed with water to form a slurry in a 1:1 ratio (by weight) to evaluate the effectiveness of this technology. The Demonstration was conducted over the 1993 winter, when freezing conditions existed for five mo of the Demonstration Test. To offset these below zero temperatures, heaters were added to the bioreactor to keep the slurry from freezing.

Technology Description: The ENSR Biovault Treatment Process is an ex-situ bioremediation technology for the treatment of organic contaminated soils. Contaminated soils placed in specially designed soil piles, referred to as biovaults, are remediated by stimulating the indigenous soil microbes to proliferate and metabolize the organic contaminants in the soil at an accelerated rate. Depending on...
متن کاملComparison of Nitroaromatic Compounds Metabolites Types by Sequencing Performance of Anaerobic-Aerobic and Aerobic-Anaerobic Processes
Introduction: Xenobiotic contamination is a global concern. Nitroaromatic compounds enter the environment through ammunition, ordnance disposal, burning the outdoors, and leakage of ammunition. Thirty percent of explosives enter the environment without any change, which can cause pollution of soil, water, and health concerns. So, effective remediation of the contaminated area is necessary. Mat...
متن کاملBioremediation of Contaminated Soils: A Comparison of In Situ and Ex Situ Techniques
When investigating the treatment of contaminated soils, the application of biotreatment is growing rapidly. Factors influencing this rapid growth include that the bioremediation processes are cost-efficient, safe, and nature-based. In the past, thermal, chemical, and physical treatment methods have failed to eliminate the pollution problem because those methods only shift the pollution to a new...

A model is presented for the analysis of bioremediation applied to an ex situ soil pile. The approach is based on the remediation of a pile containing the contaminated soil, which has been excavated from its original location, placed atop a bottom liner system and encapsulated with an impermeable cover. The liner system contains and isolates the contaminated soil and provides process control po...
